Mommy Sick Day: 5 Pick-Me-Ups!

So… Someone came home with a sneeze here, sore throat there, runny nose everywhere and wham-bam, mommy got sick! Sometimes sick days can be a fun excuse to snuggle up and catch up on extra rest and (hopefully) get lots of attention from hubby, but since “mommy” is a full time job, that’s probably not the fairy tale sick day story we all deserve. And since I recently caught a fabulous little head-cold that hubby brought home from his work trip, I decided to share my top 5 pick-me-ups (apart from the usual routine of taking Tylenol etc if needed!) that I always run to for relief and to get through those awful sick days.

Homemade Chicken Soup

I know… you don’t feel like cooking but there’s 2 very good reasons why you should make this yummy chicken soup. 1) It will keep you busy and distract you. Perhaps your kiddos can join in and if your little baby is up anyway you have something to do while you wait for the next round of naptime. 2) There is something about homemade chicken soup that is restorative and nourishing. Honestly, it’s just so comforting and an all-around great nutritious pick-me-up option for sick days! Here is a great recipe for Portuguese “Canja De Galinha” chicken soup (I’ve modified it over the years to make it super quick to make). If you’re lucky then hubby will be around to make this for you.. *extra man points* if he is!

Tea Infusion of Ginger & Lemon

Tea infusions with natural and potent ingredients keep you both hydrated and fighting fit to get well faster. If I’m feeling under the weather then my go-to is to put a medium pot of water on the stove and throw in a good amount of chopped ginger and lemon peel (don’t cut the pith with the peel because that will make it very bitter! Make sure you just grab the thin outer yellow peel which should look transparent-ish). Let it boil for a while on low heat until it’s the desired strength. Add honey if you have a sore throat! For a quick fix on a bad sick day just use the electric kettle to boil up some water and pour it into a mug of grated ginger, lemon peel and honey. If you’re on the go, doing the school run or out the house, make sure you take this along in a thermos!

Take A Hot Shower

Why does showering feel like so much more effort when you’re sick!? It’s not the most fun you’ve ever had but it’ll do you good to get in under the hot water and get clean and refreshed. It’s one of those things I dread but once I’ve put on fresh PJs or clothes after a good hot shower I definitely feel better. I keep a little bottle of Spa bath spray (mine is Lemongrass scent) which you spritz once onto the wall in the shower and it mixes in with the steam and vapor to create a lovely scent while you relax.

Don’t Skip The Comfy Clothes

Be practical – comfort is king on sick days. Whether out and about or at home, don’t be lazy about dressing appropriately for your level of illness. Snuggle into your favorite slippers and robe. If you’re going out perhaps opt for a pair of sneakers or boots rather than flats or heels. If you’re wondering about the house always keep a nice thick pair of socks on because there’s nothing worse than cold feet when you’re under the weather.

Fresh Air & Fresh Bed Linen

Cracking a window and letting some fresh air circulate through the room will change the icky vibes you might have while cooped up in your bed. It’s healthy and hygienic to circulate the air, getting the germs floating around out of the room! I also love to change my bed sheets and duvet cover – there’s no better feeling than climbing into crisp and freshly washed sheets and pillow cases when you’re getting through a cold! If you’re really tired and don’t have help to refresh the bed then at least change out the pillowcase so that you’re not constantly breathing and sleeping on icky germs that have taken up residence in your lovely pillows (and I mean, who can blame them!?… your bed is nice and warm!)
